GEO / AI SEARCH VISIBILITY

GEO vs AEO — are they the same thing?

GEO and AEO overlap, but they are not used consistently enough to assume they mean exactly the same thing. AEO usually emphasizes direct answers, while GEO emphasizes visibility within generative answers; evaluate the actual deliverables and measurement method rather than the label.

Why do the definitions overlap?

An AI-generated answer can contain a short factual response, several explanations, a comparison, and source links. Work that improves a useful answer block may therefore support both labels. The terms describe areas of practice rather than a universal technical taxonomy. Define them at the start of a supplier discussion so two parties do not agree on an acronym while expecting different outcomes.

What might an AEO project include?

A reasonable scope might review recurring customer questions, improve direct answers, remove ambiguity, and align visible FAQs with their markup. The result should help a reader complete a task. A weak scope simply adds an FAQ to every page. Ask which unanswered customer question each addition resolves and whether the page already answers it elsewhere.

What might a GEO project add?

It may include comparing generated answers, inspecting source selection, reviewing business descriptions, and tracking referral visits and subscriber outcomes. The original GEO research makes visibility in generated responses an explicit subject of study. That does not imply a standardized certification, guaranteed placement, or a uniform algorithm across products. Provider-specific observations should remain labeled by product and mode.

How should you compare two proposals?

Rewrite both proposals into the same deliverable list: pages reviewed, evidence added, technical fixes, observation protocol, reporting, and ownership of files. Then compare what is actually different. In an illustrative purchasing decision, an “AEO” supplier with clear implementation and measurement can be more useful than a “GEO” supplier offering unexplained scores. The name alone is not the basis for selection.

Who is behind this guidance?

Miklos Kovacs brings 15+ years of international corporate leadership and hands-on AI builds for small and medium-sized businesses. His work focuses on AI assessments, mentoring, automation building, and GEO. Illustrative examples on this page are teaching examples, not customer results.

Which sources can you check?

Sources checked 29 September 2026. Provider guidance describes eligibility and access, not guaranteed placement.

What else should you know?

Can one project cover both?

Yes. A coherent content and measurement project can cover direct and generative answer use cases.

Is either term an official ranking system?

No. Do not confuse industry terminology with a provider’s documented system.

Which name should my business use?

Use language your customers understand and explain the concrete service behind it.
